From the Heartland to the Lehigh Valley: Delia Mitchell’s Journey
For this POWER Profile, we sat down with Delia Mitchell, a passionate advocate for social justice and equity who found her calling with POWER Interfaith. From her roots in Louisville, Kentucky, to her impactful work in Pennsylvania, Delia shares experiences, inspirations, aspirations, and insights into her role as a Community Organizer for the Lehigh Valley, and her profound connection to POWER’s mission.
How long have you been with POWER Interfaith, and what initially drew you to the organization’s mission?
As I reflect on my time with POWER Interfaith over the past eight months, there were so many pivotal moments that led me to join this movement and the profound impact it has had on me personally, professionally, and spiritually.
My introduction to POWER came through the “Freedom Bus Tour,” an initiative that not only highlighted the pressing issues our communities face but also showcased the unwavering dedication of those working tirelessly to address them. From the very beginning, I was drawn to POWER’s mission of social justice and equity, particularly their focus on fair education funding—a cause close to my heart.
What does your role entail? How is it connected to POWER’s work?
Through my role as the Community Organizer for the Lehigh Valley, I’ve had the privilege of being at the forefront of POWER’s work in my community. Whether it’s organizing leaders, facilitating conversations, or empowering individuals to recognize their own agency, every aspect of my role is intricately connected to POWER’s overarching mission of creating a more just and equitable society.
Who or what inspired you to join the interfaith movement and contribute to social justice causes through your career?
Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, I witnessed firsthand the power of community organizing and the impact it can have on effecting positive change. My journey here is a natural extension of this upbringing, fueled by a desire to advocate for issues that directly affect me, my family, and my friends. Through Pastor Edwards’ invitation to the Freedom Tour and subsequent house meeting trainings, I found myself immersed in a community dedicated to fighting for causes that are not only important but deeply personal to me.
Looking ahead, where do you envision the impact of POWER Interfaith in the next 5 years, and how do you see yourself contributing to that vision?
I see POWER Interfaith continuing to make significant strides. From influencing legislative decisions to empowering individuals at the grassroots level, the impact of POWER’s commitment to change will be felt far and wide. As for myself, I see my role evolving into one of leadership and mentorship, guiding others in the Lehigh Valley to recognize their own power and effect change within their communities.
What advice would you give to someone new to the organizing or interfaith space?
My advice is simple: identify your self-interest and embrace it. It is through understanding our own motivations and passions that we can truly become agents of change in the world.
Reflecting on your journey at POWER, what have been the most significant challenges you’ve faced, and how did you overcome them to continue your valuable contributions?
Of course, no journey is without its challenges. Organizing individuals who may not be aware of their own power has been a significant hurdle. However, through one-on-one conversations and spiritual connections, we’ve been able to overcome these obstacles and continue our invaluable work.
When faced with demanding tasks or challenges in your role, how do you motivate yourself to stay committed to the organization’s mission?
In moments of doubt or exhaustion, it’s the people—the parents, leaders, and everyday individuals—that motivate me to stay committed to our mission. Their stories, struggles, and triumphs serve as a constant reminder of why I embarked on this journey in the first place.
Which achievements at POWER Interfaith are you most proud of and why?
From organizing impactful events like the Roadmap to Justice Convention, to building a team of leaders in the Lehigh Valley, each milestone represents a step forward in our collective pursuit of justice and equity.
Who are some of your biggest inspirations within POWER Interfaith, and how have they influenced your professional growth within the organization?
Everyone at POWER has inspired me in some way. Their hard work, dedication, knowledge, and heart for change have always inspired me to want to grow.
Everyone has a unique talent, skill, or interesting fact that might not be widely known. What’s a secret talent or aspect about yourself that you’d like to share?
As a Certified Life Coach, I find immense joy in helping others recognize their own gifts and talents, empowering them to reach their full potential.
Eight years ago, I moved to the Lehigh Valley on a leap of faith, with no connections or guarantees. Since then, I’ve found my tribe and recently delivered my initial sermon in March 2024, becoming a licensed minister—a testament to the transformative power of faith and community. I also received my Biblical Counseling Certification during the COVID pandemic.
How have you grown personally, professionally, or even spiritually since joining the team?
Personally, I’ve become more aware of my “why” and my self-interest. I’ve grown spiritually by being able to recognize how my faith plays a major role in my organizing work. I’m immensely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of POWER Interfaith and the incredible community it represents.
