We are deeply shaken by the news of yesterday’s deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, where people gathered for a Hanukkah celebration were struck by gunfire in a violent act that authorities have described as terrorism and antisemitic violence. Many lives were lost and dozens more were injured – including children, community leaders, and families who were simply coming together in peace and joy.
Bigotry hurts all of us, and antisemitism, like all forms of hatred, tears at the fabric of our shared humanity.
Our hearts go out to the Jewish community in Sydney and around the world, to every family grieving a loved one, and to those recovering from physical and emotional wounds.
We join faith leaders everywhere in condemning violence motivated by hatred. No one should have to fear for their life while practicing their faith or simply celebrating with family and neighbors. In times like this, our response must be to stand together across religious and cultural lines, to offer support, and to work toward communities where every person feels safe and valued.
To those in pain, we see you. We mourn with you. And we reaffirm our commitment to faith-rooted solidarity and to speaking out against all acts of hate.
May those who have died rest in peace, may the wounded find healing, and may communities find strength in unity and compassion.
In solidarity,
Rev. Dr. Gregory Edwards
