We at POWER Interfaith are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic killing of Sonya Massey by a Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy. The release of the body camera footage is a stark reminder of the systemic issues plaguing our communities, where Black lives are disproportionately valued less.

The events surrounding Ms. Massey’s death are a harrowing example of the fear and mistrust that exists between law enforcement and communities of color. The use of lethal force in this situation is unconscionable.

We stand in solidarity with the family and loved ones of Sonya Massey as they grieve this immense loss. We demand justice for Ms. Massey and call for a thorough and transparent investigation into this tragic incident.

This incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive police reform, including increased accountability, de-escalation training, and investment in mental health services. We must work together to create a society where all individuals, regardless of race, are treated with dignity and respect.

POWER Interfaith calls upon our community to continue to advocate for policies that prioritize the safety and well-being of all residents.

We will continue to use our voice and platform to demand justice and equality for all.In solidarity,

Rev. Dr. Gregory Edwards
Interim Executive Director
