SUMMARY:Greenbuild 2024 Conference and Expo: “When Communities Write Policy: Federal Funding for Resident-led Solutions"
DESCRIPTION:Frontline communities—those experiencing the impacts of climate change first and worst—spend disproportionately more of their income on housing and energy. They also have higher economic losses and increased health impacts from extreme weather events. Federal funds are available for equitable decarbonization\, but how do we ensure that our actions\, especially policies\, are truly inclusive of residents typically excluded from planning decisions? The City of Philadelphia is one of 9 communities that IMT is supporting with Resilient and Efficient Codes Implementation (RECI) funding to develop community-led building decarbonization policy. The City will work with a local community-based organization\, POWER Interfaith\, to pioneer this “community-led policymaking” approach to ensure that frontline communities are represented in the climate solutions the City develops. In this approach\, community organizations partner with the City throughout the policymaking process to establish resident priorities\, overcome historic challenges\, and jointly find solutions to both social and environmental justice problems. This panelist format session will highlight what has been done so far in Philadelphia\, and what lessons exist for other jurisdictions working toward similar goals.

Wildfires\, droughts\, air pollution\, extreme flooding\, and higher-than-normal temperatures are being experienced all over the globe. Children are a vulnerable population because of their unique physiology and dependence on adults for their well-being. This year’s 16th Annual CHOP Pediatric Global Health Conference\, “Rising Up Together: Child Health in the Face of Climate Change\,” will explore short- and long-term interventions to help mitigate the impact of climate change on child health. \nCo-Chairperson of Climate Justice and Jobs Team\, Pamela Darville\, will be discussing POWER’s approach to advocacy through its campaigns and community organizing for the reduction and elimination of carbon emissions that cause harm to children’s health and wellbeing. \nThe event takes place at CHOP’s HUB for Clinical Collaboration\, Room # 1632.

SUMMARY:Philly Climate Works Bike Outing
DESCRIPTION:Come bike with Philly Climate Works to learn more about Philly’s 2050 Climate Goals\, and the work that local organizations are doing to ensure that we meet these goals! We’ll have guest speakers from Clean Air Council\, Community Legal Services\, Physicians for Social Responsibility PA\, and POWER Interfaith. \nParticipants will go on a 3.5 mile bike ride from Center City to the Schuylkill River Trail\, with stops along the way to talk about climate resiliency\, housing justice\, and a just transition away from fossil fuels. \nThis event is FREE but registration is required. Participants will need a bike and helmet—if you don’t have either\, we’ll provide them if you indicate what you will need during registration. Please monitor the weather and dress appropriately; however if there is heavy rainfall\, the event will be postponed. \nWe will meet at 6pm at City Hall on the Northeast corner. If you need a bike or helmet\, please arrive 20 minutes prior to the start time to get situated with your bike and helmet. \nPlease note that this is an 18+ event and there are no pets allowed. \nLevel: Moderate\nCost: FREE\nBring: Water and a snack\, as well as your own bike and helmet (if you don’t have either\, we will provide them if indicated during registration) \nCancellation Policy: Heavy rain cancels
