Public Banking Visioning Summit

September 18, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

With the introduction of legislation by Councilmember Green to create a Philadelphia Public Bank, now is the time is now for all of us to do our part in getting the legislation across past the finish line. To enable us all to participate fully in that work, a Public Banking Visioning Summit has been scheduled for Saturday, September 18th from 1-4 P.M. Hosted by the Philadelphia Public Banking Coalition, the purpose of the Visioning Summit is to gather community leaders who have a stake in the Philadelphia Public Bank’s creation, provide them with information about the public banking movement, and gather their input into what a public bank can and should mean for our City. Democratizing our money starts with your input! The bank could be a resource for affordable public housing, small businesses, sustainable infrastructure, co-op development, environmental justice, and much more. For this to be a reality, we need public support and input to make sure the bank addresses all these needs. Come to the Summit to hear about the functioning of a public bank, the status of the localized and national movements for public banking, and the particulars of how the Philadelphia Public Bank will work, and where the money to capitalize the bank could come from. Featuring New Economy movement leaders Amara Enyia and Saqib Bhatti, preeminent public banking leader Walt McRee, Philadelphia Councilmember Derek Green, local hosts Vanessa Lowe (co-chair, POWER Econ Dig team) and Steve Paul, and many other experts and activists from around the nation, the event will provide valuable perspectives on the intersection of public banking and racial social justice issues.
